General Questions
What is kratom?
Kratom (Mitragyna speciosa) is a tropical plant native to Southeast Asia and a botanical relative of the coffee plant. Its leaves contain naturally occurring alkaloid compounds, including mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine. Kratom leaves have been consumed in Southeast Asia for centuries and are available in the US as a botanical supplement in powder, capsule, extract, and ready-to-drink formats. Research into its full range of physiological effects is ongoing.
Is kratom a controlled substance?
Kratom is not currently a federally controlled substance in the United States, but its legal status varies by state and locality. Several states and municipalities have enacted restrictions or bans. Always verify that kratom is legal in your specific state and locality before purchasing. NuWave Botanicals does not ship to locations where kratom is prohibited by law.
What is kratom tea?
Kratom tea is made by brewing kratom powder or leaves in hot water, then straining the liquid. It is one of the traditional preparation methods used in Southeast Asia. Kratom powder can also be mixed into juices, smoothies, or other beverages, or consumed in pre-measured capsule form.
Is kratom related to opioids?
Kratom (Mitragyna speciosa) is a plant in the coffee family, not the opium poppy family. It is not classified as an opioid. Its alkaloids have been studied for how they interact with various receptor systems in the body, but kratom is a distinct botanical with its own chemical profile. For questions about kratom's pharmacology and how it may interact with any medications or conditions you have, consult your healthcare provider.
Is kratom lab tested at NuWave Botanicals?
Yes. Every product in the NuWave Botanicals catalog is independently tested by accredited third-party laboratories for alkaloid content, heavy metals, pesticides, and microbial contaminants. Batch-specific Certificates of Analysis are available on our Lab Results page. We are also an American Kratom Association (AKA) Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) certified vendor.
Using Kratom
What forms does kratom come in?
Kratom is available in several formats at NuWave Botanicals: powder (the traditional format, which can be mixed into beverages or brewed as tea), capsules (pre-measured powder, portable and tasteless), liquid extracts and shots (concentrated formats for experienced users), and gummies (flavored, pre-dosed format). All formats are third-party lab tested. Browse our full product catalog for current availability.
What is the difference between red, green, and white vein kratom?
The three primary vein categories reflect the maturity of the leaf at harvest. White vein is harvested from younger leaves, green from mid-maturity leaves, and red from fully mature leaves. Each carries a different alkaloid profile. Individual responses vary depending on serving size, personal chemistry, and batch-specific alkaloid content.
Can I use kratom with other supplements?
Consult your healthcare provider before combining kratom with any other supplements, medications, or botanical products. This is especially important if you take prescription medications, have underlying health conditions, or are pregnant or nursing. NuWave Botanicals does not provide combination or interaction guidance — your healthcare provider is the appropriate resource for personalized advice.
How should I store kratom?
Kratom powder and capsules should be stored in a cool, dry location away from direct sunlight and moisture. Reseal packaging tightly after each use. Proper storage helps preserve alkaloid content and product freshness. Check individual product labels for specific storage instructions.
Legal Questions
Is kratom legal in Florida?
Kratom is legal in most of Florida. However, Sarasota County has enacted a local ban. Always verify current local laws in your specific county or municipality before purchasing. Laws can change — check your local government's official resources for the most current information.
Are there states where kratom is banned?
Yes. As of our last update, states with full or partial bans include Alabama, Indiana, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Wisconsin, among others. Some states have age restrictions or labeling requirements rather than outright bans. Always verify the current legal status in your state and locality before ordering. NuWave Botanicals does not ship to locations where kratom is prohibited.
How old do I have to be to purchase kratom?
You must be 18 years of age or older to purchase kratom products from NuWave Botanicals. Some states require purchasers to be 21. Verify the age requirement in your state before purchasing.
Can I travel with kratom?
Traveling with kratom requires verifying the legal status at both your origin and destination, as well as any states or countries you pass through. Kratom is illegal in some US states and many countries. For international travel, research the laws of every country in your itinerary thoroughly before bringing kratom across any border. NuWave Botanicals cannot provide travel or legal advice — consult a legal professional if you are uncertain.
