Good News: WHO Rejects Critical Review of Kratom

Kratom and the War on Drugs

Last week, the Kratom community received some good news. After conducting a scientific study, the United Nations World Health Organization (WHO) has decided not to propose prohibitions on the plant-derived chemical internationally.

Members of the WHO’s Expert Committee on Drug Dependence (ECDD) voted 11-1 last week to continue monitoring data on the health effects of kratom, rather than imposing rigorous limits. This will continue for the next two to three years, according to a report released last week. Members concluded that there is “insufficient evidence” to warrant a more in-depth critical examination of kratom at this time.

This is great news for the millions of people in the United States and beyond who use the benefits of kratom safely and responsibly.

Kratom Advocacy

As we all know, many providers are marketing kratom as a natural pain reliever that is a safer alternative to prescription opioid. There were fears that the WHO’s Executive Committee on Drug Dependency (ECDD) would either push for international control of kratom. A critical review could lead to scheduling another year-long investigation.

There was a scientific review of the risk of dependence, abuse potential and therapeutic applications of kratom that led to the decision. However, the kratom community was particularly proud of the fact that they were able to make their voice heard. Nearly 80,000 kratom advocates submitted comments to the panel, sharing their experiences and perspectives about the herb.

“People report using kratom to self-medicate a variety of disorders and conditions, including pain, opioid withdrawal, opioid use disorder, anxiety and depression,” according to the ECDD’s report. It also said that some countries continue to use kratom as part of their traditional medicine.

“The Committee considered information regarding the traditional use and investigation into possible medical applications of kratom,” it continued. “The Committee concluded that there is insufficient evidence to recommend a critical review of kratom.”

The Future of Kratom

Currently, the Federal Controlled Substances Act does not list kratom as a controlled substance. There are also no prohibitions regarding kratom on any international drug treaties to which the United States is a party. The FDA has contemplated imposing limitations on the substance, but has run into opposition and is unable to do so at this time.

Some proponents have speculations about this. Because the FDA has yet to establish a domestic ban on kratom, people are saying it would use the WHO convention as an opportunity to have prohibition enacted worldwide. If this happens, it would unfortunately force many kratom providers to stop providing products and services.

Kratom is currently legal in most of the United States, but has been reclassified as a controlled substance in several states, including Alabama, Arkansas, Tennessee, and Wisconsin

The fight continues for the community to keep kratom available for individuals who are in need and benefit highly from the plant-derived product. We need all the help we can get.
