Have you tried CBD yet? Are you wondering if it’s safe for your furry friend, too? With any wellness trend, there are bound to be rumors and claims popping up all over the internet. While there are studies being done on the effects of CBD in pets, much of what is currently known is anecdotal.

However, some pet owners have found that CBD has helped their pets in numerous ways, similar to the acclaimed effects for humans. In pets, CBD is thought to help with appetite, relaxation, and more. That being said, you should always consult your pet’s vet before administering a new substance to them to ensure they will have the best and safest experience.

How May CBD Help My Pooch?

According to the American Kennel Club, “there’s anecdotal evidence from dog owners suggesting it [may] treat pain, especially neuropathic pain, as well as helping to control seizures…CBD is also used because of its anti-inflammatory properties, cardiac benefits, anti-nausea effects, appetite stimulation…and for possible anti-cancer benefits”. While there is little information on the exact benefits of CBD for pets, there is much to be said about how CBD has helped pets overcome illness.

At Embrace Pet Insurance, Emma Smith tells a story of how her Pomeranian, Tinkerbell, was able to walk and use the bathroom on her own again thanks to CBD. At thirteen years old, Tinkerbell had been having seizures and had trouble walking and doing things on her own. After a dose of CBD, “the next morning she was walking, using the bathroom on her own again, and had no seizures”.

May CBD Be Used For Other Pets?

CBD has been used safely by many different types of animals, including dogs, cats, rabbits, rats, horses, pigs, ferrets, guinea pigs, and birds. Of course, depending on the size of your pet, the amount of CBD needed will vary differently. A pet rat, for example, will need to be given a tiny dose compared to a horse.

CBD might be able to help just about any creature. If an animal has an endocannabinoid system, CBD may interact with those receptors to possibly provide relief from various ailments. Just make sure you check with your vet before administering any CBD to your pets.

Things To Consider

When researching CBD for your pets, there are numerous variables to consider. Besides the obvious doses, types, and forms of CBD that you may give your pets, it’s also crucial to keep in mind that CBD is largely unregulated. Hound101 says that “more high quality research is required with appropriate clinical trials before the FDA will approve CBD as a medical therapy. Until that time, these products are not regulated.” However, if you are a pet parent to an older animal, chances are you’re stuck giving them NSAIDs (Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs). Hound101 also says that “these drugs help enormously, but there are often unpleasant side-effects, and, with prolonged use, the possibility of damage to essential organs, such as the liver and kidneys.”
